| Broadly, there are two types of insurance coverage that you need for your driving: collision and liability. Collision insurance covers the cost of repairing damage to your car if it is involved in a collision, up to a pre-specific limit. Bodily injury liability and property damage liability insurance cover the cost of damage that you might do to another person or another person’s property while operating your vehicle, up to a pre-specified limit. Each type of insurance is available for a variety of prices, in exchange for a variety of levels of coverage — a cheaper plan will cover less of the damage. The level of coverage needed, and the options for spending that coverage, depends on the type of car and the risk of being in a collision or causing damage. For instance, if the value of the car itself is very low, then it is unlikely your would opt to pay a large sum of money to get it repaired, but you would want the option of replacing it instead. Conversely, the price an insurance company will charge for that level of coverage will depend on the risk they assess of you being in a collision or causing damage, which will be based on a number of factors, including your age and driving record, as well as the age and model of the car itself. |
| Some insurance companies offer packages called “comprehensive coverage” which provides for the cost of damage to your vehicle by events other than a collision. These often include theft, flood damage, fire, and animal attack. The last kind of insurance you may need is Uninsured Motorist insurance. Even though it is illegal for other drivers to operate their vehicles without insurance, some may break the law and do so. If you are in a collision with such a person, they will not have insurance to cover their liability for your bodily injury and property damage, as they should. Uninsured Motorist insurance provides coverage for your costs of these types in the event that the liable driver has no insurance. |
